You get approximately 50 grammes of shredded catmint from Indian Elements.

Info Specs Reviews

Catmint or Catnip gives a nice feeling of relaxation and is a tasty herb. The Catmint (Nepeta cataria) stimulates a cat’s pheromone receptors, making them excited and causing them to continuously search for the Catmint.

Catmint Effect

In normal doses, the herb provides a relaxed feeling. Higher doses can stimulate the imagination and have a light hallucinogenic effect. The taste of catnip is pleasant and it is relaxing and mildly hallucinogenic.

Catnip is regularly used to aid sleep and ease menstrual discomfort. Drinking a strong catnip tea has a pleasant relaxing effect, and can provide a slight high. It also stimulates the imagination. Catnip is ideal for having a peaceful evening, listening to relaxing music and unwinding after a long busy day.

Using Catmint Yourself

Use approximately 25 grams of chopped catnip and 1 litre of water to make strong tea. Boil the substance for 15 minutes, strain out the herb, and drink the remaining liquid with honey or sugar. To assess the effect, it is best to drink one cup of tea first and wait for the effect. Afterwards, you can gradually try more cups of tea.

Catnip can be combined with Damiana, Valerian and Galangal.

Using Catmint for Cats

Take it from a cat lover: get the box in which your order was delivered but don’t throw it away. Put a teaspoonful of catmint in the empty box and place the box in the middle of the room. Now go and sit on the sofa and enjoy a cup of catmint tea while watching how your cat tries to become one with the box. Professional tip: don’t leave your empty cup unattended. Otherwise you might find it in pieces on the floor.

Constituents of Catmint

Why does it get cats so hot under the collar? Among other things, catmint contains a terpene called Nepetalactone. Additionally, catmint contains nerol, carvacrol, volatile oil, citronellal, pulegone, nepetalic acid, geraniol, thymol, and tannin.

The chemical composition is similar to valepotriates in the valerian herb. This suppresses the central nervous system slightly, but it can also work as a stimulant on some people. That explains the relaxing effect on us and why cats go crazy for it. Valerian can also have this effect on some cats.
