How to Make Weed Tea

Why drink weed tea?

A cup of tea infused with THC. The flavour is up for debate, but it is clear that it has a nice effect on your body. We already told you that making weed tea is incredibly easy. Still, you have to take more steps than when making a joint. So why do people make cannabis tea? Our experience shows that people do it for two reasons.

Stoner Tea

Some people drink it simply to get stoned or high. Think of it as an alternative or variation on the old-fashioned joint. For those who can genuinely enjoy the flavour of cannabis, it is a logical choice. Weed tea smells and tastes like the weed you put in it, without the interference of any tobacco. Think of it as a liquid hit from the vaporizer.

However, the effect of weed tea is quite different from smoking a joint or taking a hit from a vaporizer. This has to do with the way THC is decomposed by your body. People generally report that the high is more physical. The effect lasts much longer. Curious how it works? Read our blog on the effect of edibles.

Medicinal Weed Tea

When you only want to benefit from the healing powers of cannabis, it is called medicinal cannabis tea. This is popular mainly because you can ingest it without having to smoke or vape. Weed tea, like cannabis, can be used for a number of conditions. Chronic pain from various diseases, for example. Medicinal cannabis tea can be made with any type of cannabis you like. Some types can be used to treat specific complaints.

Medicinal Weed Tea

How to Make Weed Tea

The most important thing you need to know about making weed tea is that you can't just take some buds and throw it in a cup of hot water. You need grease to dissolve the weed and thereby "activate" it. THC does not bind to water, but it does to fat. If you do just use water, you'll sieve the weed out and not notice anything. That is why you need the following ingredients.

  • A gram of weed
  • One teaspoon of butter (or coconut oil for a vegetable-based option)
  • 700 ml of water

Want to make just one cup of tea? Use half the ingredients. Prefer plant-based? Then use coconut oil. Want to add a flavour to your tea? Add a little (vanilla) sugar, cinnamon or honey. Or add another tea bag of course!

  1. Grab a mug, small pan and something to strain. This can be an empty tea bag, a tea egg, or a coffee filter if necessary.
  2. Crumble the weed as finely as possible. Mix it with the butter until it is completely soaked.
  3. Take your tea egg, tea bag or coffee filter and put everything in.
  4. Bring the water to a boil and place your filter bag or tea egg in the water.
  5. Let the bag steep for 30 minutes while the water gently boils (so not on the highest setting). Pay attention to the level of the water. Does it drop a lot? Top it up, but keep the temperature near the boiling point.
  6. After 30 minutes you can remove the filter bag or tea egg. Check to make sure there are no pieces left behind.
  7. Add any flavoring you like and let the tea cool down. Then you are ready to enjoy!

Making Weed Tea from Leaves and Branches

You know what the great thing about cannabis tea is? You can use cutting waste from your weed plant for it. The little sugar leaves you cut away from between the buds are full of THC and other active ingredients. So are the smallest twigs or branches that come out from between the buds when you crumble it. That's where the resins fall onto. So you can also make weed tea from leaves and twigs. Just keep in mind that you will need a bit more and will not be able to estimate the dosage very well. You also need to be careful not to let the twigs tear the filter bags.

Large quantity? Make Weed Butter!

Do you work with coconut oil, do you make weed tea from leaves and twigs, or plan to make weed tea more often? If so, you're better off making weed butter. This way, when you crave a cup of tea, all you have to do is cut off a dot of butter! The recipe for weed butter can be found here.

Make weed tea with (plant-based) milk

You can also make weed tea with (plant-based) milk. Put about 0.20 liters of milk in a pan (half a mug). You add about 0.20 grams of marijuana and let it boil for 15 minutes while stirring. Put it in a mug and also add 0.20 liters of water. Filter the whole thing and you're done. Increase or decrease the dosage as desired. Watch out for the intensity!

  • The effect of cannabis tea comes on after about 30 to 45 minutes. So not immediately after drinking it. Keep in mind that it may take longer with you, so don't drink the rest of the teapot after half an hour.
  • The effects can last for 4 to 6 hours and slight after-effects up to 8 hours!

Buying weed tea in the store or coffee shop

Beware of buying cannabis tea in stores. Often they are hemp tea. This is not the same thing. There is no THC in it, so you won't get high or stoned. However, it is a good way to get familiar with the flavour of weed or hemp tea.

Want to buy the "real" weed tea? You will be able to find that in the Netherlands in the coffee shop. Some coffee shops offer it. This is allowed, because it is not an extract of the cannabis plant. In reality, it is different. Coffeeshops have been busted before for selling products with cannabis in them. So they are right to be cautious. So: buy weed tea? Do a good search in the Dutch coffeeshops!

Cannabis tea Experiences

Team Dutch-Headshop has experience in making cannabis tea. We only use it to enjoy it and have no medical reasons for doing so. From experience we know that you should not underestimate weed tea. Don't think: "That dose is for sissies". Especially if it is the first time you use cannabis in a way other than smoking or vaping. Let it soak in for a while before you take another cup.

Other than that, we can tell from our cannabis tea experiences that it's a lot like space cake. You feel stoned or high, without the sluggish feeling of smoking. The effect is felt throughout your body and not just in your head. In our opinion it is perfect for an evening of couch lounging and watching a movie. Laughing and playing games with your friends? You can make a whole pitcher for that, too.

Medicinal cannabis tea experiences vary greatly. For many people with various conditions, it's worth its weight in gold because they don't have to smoke or vape. The fact that the effect lasts so long is perfect for people with chronic pain. Other than that, we're not allowed to say that much about the medicinal effects of weed tea.

Tasty Edibles to go with it

Want something tasty to eat with your cup of cannabis tea? Then you can finish the feast with cannabis candy and cookies or cannabis edibles.
