San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi) cactus seeds need a while to germinate, but once the cactus has been germinated it grows rapidly. In total the germination and root development of the cactus seeds can take up to 1 year. It takes some time but as soon as you see the cactus start to grow you’ll appreciate why you’ve done it.In contrast to other cacti, the San Pedro grows comparatively fast. Eventually the cactus will grow by 10 to 50 centimetres per year.

Cactus Trip
The San Pedro Cactus originates in South American countries like Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. It grew in the high Andes mountains and was used for shamanistic and religious purposes. The mescaline in the cactus can give you heavy trip effects such as hallucinations and a distorted sense of reality. The effects are comparable to those of LSD, shrooms and magic truffles but have their own distinctive character.
What is Mescaline?
The psychoactive substance mescaline is naturally present in these cacti. This compound is in a somewhat different form from pure mescaline though. Therefore you need a decent amount of a cactus such as peyote, san pedro or peruvian torch in order to get the same effects as a chemically produced, pure mescaline. From the other point of view, you will be tripping magnificently on something that is naturally occurring. The effect can be compared to a trip on shrooms, ayahuasca or LSD, but the trip lasts for longer and it is accompanied by unique nuances. The effect begins some 45 to 90 minutes after taking. It is often accompanied by the sour taste of the cactus coming back to haunt you. You may want to vomit. According to the shaman and medicine man, that’s all part of the experience. The peak experience unfolds some 4 to 6 hours after swallowing the cactus, with the total trip lasting between 8 and 14 hours.
Preparing San Pedro & Peruvian Torch
These cactus seeds are suitable only for cultivation purposes. The seeds are not intended for consumption. You can eat the cactus as soon as it reaches maturity. The San Pedro is a prickly phenomenon that you need to disarm and then peel all round. After that, the San Pedro is ready for use and you can look forward to a heavy trip.

Storing, Drying and/or Repotting Cacti
San Pedro, Peruvian Torch and other cacti containing mescaline are fast-growing cacti. Since 150-200 grams of fresh San Pedro is enough for a strong mescaline trip, you'll quickly have a small stem (cutting or torch) left over. If you plan on using the cactus again in the future, you must take good care of the wound. Only cut with a clean, very sharp knife. It's best to hold the knife over a flame, either over the stove or with a lighter with a blue flame, to disinfect it. Let the knife cool before cutting to prevent infections on the leftover stem.
Storage outside the refrigerator
You can store such a cutting for up to 3 months after it has been cut. Wrap the spiky stem in a few layers of kitchen paper and store it in a kitchen cabinet out of reach of children and pets. We do not recommend storing it in the refrigerator because the relative humidity is often too high.
Drying
By storing the cactus as described above, it will already lose some moisture. The cactus can be used immediately or replanted. However, if you want it to be bone dry, keep in mind that you won't be able to replant it afterwards. Drying has the advantage of increasing the concentration of mescaline per gram of cactus, so you'll need to consume less for the same effect. Cut the cactus into very small pieces. The smaller, the better they can dry. Spread the pieces out on a piece of kitchen paper on a large baking sheet or plate. Place a cup in the middle and cover it with a clean, dry tea towel. Place the dish or plate in a location out of reach of children or pets. Replace the kitchen paper daily. Your pieces of cactus will be dried within 5-7 days. Then you can store them in a grip bag, preferably with a silica gel packet (don't worry, they're not toxic as long as you don't eat the packet).
Propagating San Pedro and other mescaline cacti (repotting)
If you want to replant/propagate San Pedro, Peruvian Torch or other cacti*, you can follow the steps below.
*these instructions do not apply to peyote cacti. For those, use a whole cactus (button) at once.
- Recently cut the cactus? Gently dab the wounds of the mother plant and the cutting with some kitchen paper to absorb most of the wound fluid. Then place the cutting in a warm and dry location with indirect light, where it's no more than 25 °C. Note: do not place it in the sun!
- Before you can propagate the cactus, the wound must first be well dried. How long this takes depends on the size of the wound. Long cuttings with a small wound are ideal. Leave the cutting for at least a week and check if it's dry.
- Do you see dots or spots on the wound of the cactus? The wound may be infected. Cut off a 0.5 centimeter piece and try to let the wound dry better.
- Fill a pot with holes at the bottom with a mixture of sand and potting soil. This combination is necessary for drainage. Place the dried cutting in the middle of the pot, about 3 centimeters deep. Put the cactus cutting back in a warm place outside direct sunlight, just like the mother plant.
- Wait until the plant has rooted (takes about 3 to 6 weeks) and then only give small amounts of water. If the propagation was successful, you can gradually give it more water and light over time.
