Info Specs Reviews

The fruits of the raspberry are especially popular worldwide, but did you know that raspberry leaves are also packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants? Also, raspberry leaves are known as the 'Woman's herb' why that is so we tell you below.

What is Raspberry?

The raspberry is a shrub plant in the rose family, also known by the Latin name Rubus idaeus. Originally, raspberries come from Europe and northern Asia. Nowadays, raspberries are also widely produced in other areas.

Raspberry leaves have been used since the Middle Ages, according to folklore. These leaves are said to cure all kinds of ailments and burdens. Apart from the alleged beneficial effects, raspberries are also just plain delicious, both the fruit and the leaves are great in a nice fruity cup of tea.

The effects of raspberry leaf

The leaves of the raspberry plant contain important nutrients. Think vitamins B, C & E, as well as the minerals calcium, magnesium & zinc. Raspberry plants are an ideal source of plant-based dietary fibre. Further present in the leaves are polyphenols, which are natural antioxidants that protect us from damage inside our bodies.

Traditionally, raspberry tea is also often drunk to reduce menstrual cramps. The raspberry leaf contains fragrin that can strengthen and tighten the muscles in the pelvic area, this would potentially provide support for menstrual cramps. There have even been studies claiming that its influence on the pelvic muscles can have a positive effect during childbirth. For these reasons, the leaf of the raspberry plant has also been dubbed 'the woman's herb'. However, it is important to note that there is still too little research on the actual effectiveness of these leaves.

Raspberry tea preparation

Making raspberry leaf tea is quite easy. Here is a simple recipe to get you started:

  1. Take 2 to 5 teaspoons of raspberry leaves.
  2. Let it steep for 15 minutes in boiling hot water.
  3. Pour the tea through a sieve to remove all leaves.

Tip: add some honey for a more complex flavour or cool your drink with ice cubes on a hot summer day!
