Penis Envy mushrooms

Penis Envy mushrooms not only have a striking appearance that leaves little to the imagination, but they also come with a remarkable backstory. Their origin goes back to the 1970s, when the famous ethnobotanist Terence McKenna discovered an unusual Psilocybe cubensis during a trip to the Amazon. The spores later made their way through a man named Jules Stevens to mycologists Steven Pollock and Richard Gutierrez. Gutierrez managed to stabilize the strain we now know as Penis Envy – recognizable by its thick stems and compact caps. The name arose from a tongue-in-cheek comment comparing its shape to the male genital organ.

Penis Envy is one of the most talked-about and cultivated cubensis strains in the world. It is a symbol of underground mycology, but these mushrooms are more than just eye-catching.

Strength and effects

Penis Envy is regarded as one of the most powerful Psilocybe cubensis varieties, often containing significantly more psilocybin than other strains. This results in intense visuals, deeper introspection, and a longer, more overwhelming trip that is sometimes compared to LSD or DMT. Even experienced psychonauts report that Penis Envy trips dive deeper and are less predictable than those of milder cubensis. Our advice: stick to a lower dosage than what our calculator suggests.

Growing mushrooms in 6 steps

1. Clean your hands and the outside of the grow kit.
2. Poke holes in the top layer with a sterilized fork and let the kit soak in water.
3. Place the kit in the grow bag with a little water at the bottom.
4. Close the bag with the paperclips and store it at 20 to 24 °C.
5. After 3 to 5 weeks, the first mushrooms will appear. Ensure fresh air and sufficient humidity.
6. Harvest the mushrooms when the veil under the cap tears, by holding the mushroom at the base of the stem between thumb and forefinger and gently twisting.

With the right care, you can get multiple harvests from one kit. The first flush usually gives the highest yield. Sometimes the mushrooms have odd shapes – that’s normal. They are perfectly suitable for consumption and can even be stronger.

Expected total yield (multiple flushes)

The yield depends on your cultivation conditions such as humidity and temperature. 3 to as many as 7 flushes may be possible. Our advice: continue growing with the kit until it no longer produces mushrooms or shows contamination. Always follow our manual (scan the QR code on the packaging).

How do mushrooms work?

Mushrooms contain psilocybin and psilocin – substances that cause intense visuals, altered perception, and creative insights. You’ll notice the first effects within 30 to 60 minutes of consumption. Dosage

For dried Penis Envy mushrooms, a normal dose is between 0.7 and 2 grams. Penis Envy is among the strongest cubensis varieties, so start extra carefully. For beginners, a half dose is recommended. A so-called heroic dose, where it feels like you are one with the universe and lose your sense of self, is about 4 grams of dried Penis Envy mushrooms. Never attempt this on your first trip. Only for very experienced psychonauts.

Storage

Store the grow kit in the refrigerator at 3 to 6 °C. This way, it stays fresh for 3 to 6 months. You must dry your harvest immediately after picking. How to do this is explained in the manual, which you can access by scanning the QR code. Dried mushrooms can be stored for 6 to 12 months in a cool, dark place. Always check their condition before use. If they are no longer good, they will turn gray and/or green after several months. Blue bruising, however, is normal. Do not freeze mushrooms and do not heat them, as this destroys the active compounds.
