What You Need to Know About Magic Truffles

What are magic truffles?

Magic truffles are a type of sclerotia: underground structures in which mushrooms and other fungi store nutrients. Thanks to their naturally occurring psychedelic compounds, they produce effects similar to magic mushrooms.

What's the difference between magic mushrooms and truffles?

Magic mushrooms are psychedelic mushrooms that grow above ground. Magic truffles grow underground. The magic truffles available to buy do not come from the same species as most magic mushrooms. In practice, there are some differences as well as similarities:

  1. How they're taken: magic truffles are usually eaten fresh, while magic mushrooms are generally taken dried.
  2. Strength and dosage: fresh magic truffles contain 2 to 7 times less active compounds than dried cubensis mushrooms. You'll therefore need a larger amount for a comparable effect.
  3. Effects: their effects are almost identical.
  4. Legality: ready-to-use magic truffles are legally available in the Netherlands. Ready-to-use magic mushrooms are no longer legal to sell there, so you would need to grow your own.
  5. Species: magic mushrooms and truffles come from different species. Magic mushrooms include species such as Psilocybe cubensis, P. cyanescens and P. semilanceata. Magic truffles first became popular through Psilocybe mexicana, followed by P. tampanensis.

Dosage: how many grams of magic truffles should I take?

Use our truffle dosage calculator to calculate your magic truffle dosage. Mexicana? High Hawaiians? Valhalla? Select your variety in the calculator. It also explains the different trip levels.

A standard dose is between 7 and 15 grams of fresh truffles, depending on your experience and the variety.

A microdose is approximately 1 gram of fresh magic truffles.

Own-brand magic truffles

We offer a wide range of magic truffles, including our own-brand varieties. They're not only our most affordable truffles, but also come with minimal packaging to reduce their environmental footprint. Take it from us: they're just as potent as other brands, last just as long in the fridge and taste the same. Sometimes only the name is different because certain invented names can't be reused. For example, we also named our Psilocybe odin after Norse mythology. They're the same magic truffles as another brand's, just with a different name.

Species or strain?

The terms "species" and "strain" are often used interchangeably when talking about truffles. A strain is roughly a variety or lineage. Psilocybe mexicana was once thought to be a different species from P. tampanensis. However, research published in April 2025 suggests that Mexicana, Galindoi and Tampanensis are genetically the same species, with only minor differences.

How do you eat magic truffles?

Magic truffles are best eaten fresh. Their flavour is similar to rather bitter mushrooms or spicy rye bread, as they're often grown on rye or other grains.

This may be the most important consideration of all. Your surroundings, or setting, have a major influence on how enjoyable your truffle trip will be. That's why we recommend taking magic truffles only in a familiar, safe environment, with a sober trip sitter present. The more comfortable you feel, the more enjoyable the trip is likely to be. Never let friends pressure you into taking them. Only do so if you genuinely want to and feel the day is right.

Should you eat before taking magic truffles?

For 3 hours before taking them, avoid eating or drinking anything except water. This is said to make the effects stronger and reduce nausea.

Magic truffle tea?

Not everyone enjoys the taste of magic truffles. A popular alternative is to make truffle tea.

Use hot water that's no longer boiling (70–75°C) to preserve the active compounds. Let finely chopped magic truffles steep for 20 minutes. You can keep the water warm with a tealight. Ginger or liquorice add flavour, while blue lotus turns your tea as blue as a magic potion!

Where should you (not) take magic truffles?

The effects of magic truffles depend heavily on your surroundings, or setting. Some places are therefore much more suitable than others.

Good places to take magic truffles

  • In your own home
  • At a close friend's home
  • In a rented holiday cottage surrounded by nature
  • Outdoors in nature (woods, dunes, beach)

Bad places to take magic truffles

Loud, crowded places full of strangers are a definite no-go when taking magic truffles:

  • Festivals, parties, concerts - You may no longer be able to filter all the sensory input, making the trip overwhelming.
  • On the street, in town, near roads and cycle paths - Your reactions slow down and you may fail to notice danger.
  • Around people you don't fully trust - If you have a difficult experience, can you really rely on the person you're with?

Magic truffle effects

Then comes the truffle trip. Contrary to what you may have heard, "hallucinations" don't necessarily mean seeing little creatures running around the room. Mandala-like patterns, eyes and shapes may appear on walls, ceilings and floors, and everything can seem to "breathe". A truffle trip generally unfolds like this:

  • Onset: when the trip starts - The effects often begin between 20 minutes and an hour after taking them. A higher dose may be felt sooner. Never take an extra dose of magic truffles just because you haven't felt anything after an hour. Save the rest for another time and only consider adjusting the dosage then. Early effects often include yawning, weak legs, tingling, smiling and dilated pupils.
  • Peak: when the effects are strongest - The peak usually occurs around 2 to 4 hours after taking them. Emotions, hallucinations and philosophical thoughts can become particularly intense. The intensity rises and falls in waves.
  • Comedown: the effects gradually fade - After the peak, the effects fade in waves. It can feel like a lingering afterglow. You'll probably feel tired and may have vivid dreams when you sleep. Give yourself time to rest and process your experience. Sometimes it feels as though you've been travelling for a week and have only just returned home.
  • Total duration: approximately 5 to 8 hours.
  • After-effects - It's called a trip because it can feel like an adventure through your own mind. Allow yourself time to process it. Many psychonauts (people who take psychedelics) say it doesn't feel like a hangover, but that they need anywhere from a day to several weeks to make sense of everything they experienced.
It feels like I've been travelling for a week.

Trip levels: the intensity and effects of magic truffles

Each higher level also includes the effects of the previous levels.

  1. Level 1: Light dose - An introduction to change | You feel mildly euphoric, almost as if you're slightly stoned. Colours look brighter, sounds richer and music more beautiful. You remain grounded in reality and in control. Suitable for beginners.
  2. Level 2: Mild dose - The world breathes | Colours shift, surfaces seem to move and mild visual distortions and patterns appear when your eyes are closed. Creativity and fits of laughter increase. You still have a good grasp of reality.
  3. Level 3: Standard dose - The classic trip | Clear patterns and distortions appear with both open and closed eyes. Synesthesia (blending of the senses) and altered time perception are possible. The experience becomes deeper and more imaginative. Only take them in a safe, familiar environment.
  4. Level 4: High dose - Letting go of the ego | Strong hallucinations, entities, talking objects and a sense of connection with everything. The sense of self may partly or completely dissolve. Time and reality blur. Emotions can be intense, and spiritual insights are possible. Only with experienced supervision.
  5. Level 5: "Heroic" dose - The self disappears | Contact with physical reality fades. The boundaries between body, space and time disappear. The senses no longer function normally. Emotions can be extremely intense and overwhelming, with a sense of oneness with the universe or total disorientation. Only for very experienced users with extensive preparation.
  6. Level 6: Beyond what is useful | Each higher level increases the risk of a bad trip. Communicating with someone who has taken a heroic dose may become impossible, let alone someone who has taken more. Blackouts or feelings of paralysis in the arms and legs may occur. Extremely challenging. Best avoided.

Drying magic truffles

Want to store magic truffles for longer than a month? You can dry them, but never use excessive heat, as this can damage their active compounds. Never put fresh truffles in the freezer either, as freezing damages the cell membranes and can greatly reduce their potency.

Cut them into small pieces and dry them using a food dehydrator or in a warm, well-ventilated place.

Properly dried magic truffles can be stored for months.

The truffles are not working. I took the whole pack.

Although unlikely, one batch can sometimes be less potent than another. Magic truffles are natural products. Here are our tips:

  • Test the batch. If you order two identical packs or buy a larger pack, the truffles will almost always come from the same harvest. For example, you could take 2 to 5 grams on a weekday evening to gauge their potency.
  • Don't eat for 3 hours beforehand. This is said to help your body process psilocybin.
  • Dim the lights, lower the music and turn off the TV. Your senses may need fewer distractions. Visuals often appear first with your eyes closed.
  • Take your body weight into account. Our truffle dosage calculator accounts for differences in body weight. Your dosage may have been too low.

For your own safety, we don't recommend taking a much larger amount next time. This batch may have been weaker, but the next one could be stronger. You want to avoid taking too much.

Can I give magic truffles to someone else?

According to the law, only indoors and only if the other person fully agrees with the decision.

Are there situations when I should avoid taking truffles?

Yes. Don't take truffles (or other psychedelics such as magic mushrooms):

  • If you've been drinking or have taken, or plan to take, other drugs.
  • If you're having a bad day, feeling angry or sad.
  • If you or someone in your family has mental health problems.
  • If you take medicines or herbs that affect serotonin, such as antidepressants or St John's wort.
  • If you have significant responsibilities that day.
  • If you want to take truffles again because you think your first dose didn't work. Don't take more. Save them for another occasion.
