Beginners, advanced... Growing mushrooms is for everyone!

That’s right! Growing mushrooms isn’t difficult. Still, there’s a growing number of enthusiastic growers who aren’t that into easy growkits. But even if you choose the more unique growkits, you’re still facing quite a challenge. In this article we talk about more advanced cultivation methods such as PF-Tek and other methods where you work from spores or liquid culture, and later we introduce a number of mushroom species that can be next level enough.

Into the lab: growing mushrooms like a pro

Guide: growing mushrooms from a spore print or spore syringe*

*Not to be confused with a liquid culture syringe. That description is further down.

Mushrooms go through different stages in their life. Mature mushrooms slowly open up and release spores that are so light they can be carried by a small gust of wind or on the backs of insects. Those spores are comparable to seeds in plants. When spores germinate, they grow into mycelium: a network of fungal threads that searches through the substrate for food and a suitable living environment. Only when that mycelium is large and dense enough does it switch to the next phase: forming mushrooms. What you want to learn here is how to get that mycelium to germinate and expand with as little chance of infection or, in a fancier word: contamination.

This is what you want to know. Here’s how to germinate mushroom spores and create a clean starter culture.

Gloves and optionally a face mask

Sterile workspace

Wash your hands well and clean your workspace with alcohol. Prepare your agar-agar medium according to the recipe, pour it into Petri dishes and sterilize it all in a pressure cooker until the medium has set clear.

Perform the following steps in as sterile an environment as possible. In laboratories, a flow hood or a still air box is used to reduce airborne contamination.

Heat your knife in a flame to sterilize it, let the knife cool completely before touching the spore material.

Open the spore print, take a very small amount of spores with the sterile knife and place it in the middle of the agar surface in the Petri dish.

Seal the Petri dish with parafilm or tape so no air or dust can get in. Store the Petri dish at a stable temperature (preferably around 20-25 °C) in a dark place.

After a few days to a week, the mycelium starts growing in a bright white network over the agar surface. It should remain entirely white; other colors indicate contamination*.

Left: too bad. This one is contaminated. Right: congratulations, you can move on to the next step.

*Even master growers don’t always get lucky. If it turns a color other than white, you have a contamination. Discard the contents and choose a better dish or start again with the steps above. That’s why it’s wise to prepare multiple Petri dishes. You’ll have a higher chance of success.

Making liquid culture

Liquid culture is a liquid nutrient medium in which mycelium can actively grow. The advantage of liquid culture is that you can easily add it to a nutrient base. That’s called inoculating. Liquid culture grows faster and gives more reliable results than adding spores directly because mycelium is already present. Making a good liquid culture depends entirely on sterile work and the right nutrient solution.

Shopping list

2 glass jars with metal screw lids

A resealable rubber injection port

A filter sticker with a mesh size of max 0.4 micron

Sterile knife or scalpel

Alcohol and disinfected gloves

Recipe for liquid culture medium (for example water plus light malt extract or other sugars)

Pressure sterilizer or pressure cooker

For liquid culture and later substrate, the lid of your jar needs two passages: one for fresh air via a filter and one for the syringe needle. If you also want to grow your mushrooms from a jar, you’ll need at least 2 jars that you prepare the same way. It’s important that you keep at least 1 lid intact.

Modifying the lid for liquid culture and substrate

Cut a hole in the lid just smaller than the filter sticker so the sticker fits tightly. Then cut a hole for the injection port and place it firmly. Use a new filter and injection port for each jar to prevent contamination.

A lid with a filter sticker and a rubber injection port that reseals itself after you pull the needle out.

Put agar-agar in a jar and dilute with boiled and cooled water. The ideal ratio is 4% agar-agar to 96% water, so slightly weaker than 1 in 20. Screw a whole lid (without holes) tightly onto the jar.

Place the closed jar with nutrient and the modified lid with holes (but without filter and injection port) in the pressure cooker and sterilize for 15-20 minutes at 15 psi or 1035 millibar. Then let the lid with holes dry on a clean surface (do not dry with a cloth) and then apply the new sterile filter sticker and injection port. Let the jar cool completely to room temperature without opening it.

Next, in a sterile environment, open a fully white colonized agar plate and cut out a piece of agar with clean mycelium using a sterile blade. Put this piece into the jar with the liquid medium. Replace the lid with the lid with filter and injection port. Close and seal the jar with parafilm or tape and store at room temperature. Gently swirl the jar daily so the mycelium distributes through the medium. When swirling, make sure it doesn’t slosh against the filter. Within days to weeks, the mycelium grows into a cloudy culture with white flakes. When this is achieved, the liquid culture is ready to use.

Making your own substrate:

If you make your own substrate (nutrient base) and want to grow in a glass jar, you also need to prepare a lid as described earlier. Fill a glass jar with:

Perlite: about 1 part, for moisture retention and airiness.

Vermiculite: about 2 parts, for airiness and moisture retention.

Nutrients (for example soaked brown rice or rye flour)*: about 1 part, as a food source for mycelium.

Water: add water until the mixture is moist but not soaking wet.

*There are many options for a nutrient base. In practice, some form of grain is always used. Sorghum, wheat, barley, rye flour, brown rice and even birdseed work. But you do need to moisten it. Whole grains also need soaking; steeping in warm water. We once had a customer on the phone who had injected a liquid culture syringe straight into a bag of brown rice: that doesn’t work for 2 reasons: you can only use sterile nutrient base and the grains must be soaked. It’s also best to add perlite and vermiculite to improve the properties of the substrate. After all, you’re not doing all this effort for 1 mushroom, but for a large yield. So follow the steps as we describe them and don’t try to cut corners.

Growing mushrooms with liquid culture: inoculation and incubation

If you buy a ready-to-use liquid culture syringe: Needles in a liquid culture kit are sterile packed. Only open them when you’re fully ready to inject.

If you’re continuing from the previous section: in a sterile environment, in one smooth motion replace the solid lid with the lid you fitted with a new filter and injection port.

You can also buy a growkit with only sterile substrate. It already has an injection port and filter in the lid. After inoculation, you can put it back in the box and store it in a dark place.

Now inject the liquid culture with a sterile syringe through the injection port of the jar or the tray with sterile substrate.

These are the steps for our growkit with sterile substrate:

Disinfect the white circle on the lid of the sterile growkit with an alcohol wipe.

Attach the needle to your liquid culture syringe.

Insert the needle at an angle through the white circle and inject the culture completely into the growkit.

Tip: The fungus grows fastest if you inject on different sides. But don’t remove the needle in between. Rotate the needle in different directions while it’s still in, and empty the syringe completely.

Keep the lid closed up to and including the moment when the entire jar or the entire tray of substrate is white from the continuously growing fungus. Mushrooms will not grow if the tray isn’t completely white. How long it takes for the fungus to fully colonize depends heavily on the base (substrate) and the temperature. The warmer, the faster. But there is definitely a maximum. And because fungus gets a bit warmer as it grows, we don’t recommend using heat during this step, such as a heat mat. Room temperature (19-21 degrees Celsius) should be sufficient. In most cases it takes 4 to 6 weeks for the tray to be fully colonized, but again: it depends on the circumstances.

Growing mushrooms

Once you have a jar or tray of substrate that’s fully white-colonized, in the case of your jar you’re faced with an interesting choice. How are you going to fruit mushrooms from it? One method is to place the jar in a resealable plastic bag or plastic container and only open the lid so the mushrooms grow out. Another method is the monotub technique: you gently shake the cake out of the jar onto aluminum foil and place a large plastic tub over it. For fresh air, make a few holes in the tub and cover them with filter stickers. The first stage of mushroom formation needs enough moisture, which you can provide by misting several times a day with a spray bottle on mist setting.

For a tray with sterile substrate that has turned completely white after a few weeks, you basically only need to follow the instructions from the beginner guide; You soak the kit for 8 hours in water, remove the lid from the tray and place it in the included bag, where you add a small layer of water for humidity.

Tip: Cold shock

We store our growkits in which mycelium has already grown at 4 degrees Celsius. To give your freshly colonized jar or tray of home-grown mycelium the best start, you can simulate autumn by placing the jar or tray in the refrigerator for 24 hours right before starting this step. Soak the kit for 8 hours after it comes out of the fridge.

Whether you choose a tray or a bag: make sure there’s enough moisture by misting 2 or 3 times on the first day with a spray bottle on mist setting.

Now continue with the final steps from the beginner guide. With a bit of patience and attention, you’ll have beautiful home-grown mushrooms within 2 to 3 weeks.

Want to know how strong your mushrooms are? Test them at home with the easy PsiloQ test. It gives you a good indication of the psilocybin concentration in your home-grown mushrooms.

Challenging mushroom growkits

In our blog growing mushrooms for beginners, you read that Psilocybe cubensis is the species of mushrooms for which you have the most growkit options. That’s not for nothing, because this species is exceptionally well suited to growing in a tray with a sterile base. The method is so easy that many hobbyists around the world have already crossbred grow kits with each other to bring new varieties to market. Still, varieties of cubensis are still the same species.

Cubensis

Within cubensis mushroom growkits, there are a few varieties that stand out.

B+ is known to be easy to grow. By “easy” we mean the mushrooms are fairly resistant to contamination, can cope with less-than-ideal conditions and have a shorter time to harvest. The latter also reduces the chance of contamination. Because the shorter the exposure to the environment, the greater the chance of success.

Penis Envy is known to be difficult to grow if you look only within the cubensis species. That’s why it took so long (decades!) before growkits with Penis Envy genetics came onto the market. We were pleasantly surprised it worked out, and proud that we can now sell them to you. What makes Penis Envy “difficult” in our view is that it can take 3-5 weeks before you see the first mushrooms. It also takes time to build those thick stems. They are much thicker than the diameter of other cubensis such as a Golden Teacher or McKennaii. The reward is in the psilocybin concentration. Penis Envy can be significantly stronger than its relatives due to the larger mushroom that needs more time before it can be harvested. Dutch-Headshop cubensis growkits can be recognized by a yellow sticker.

Panaeolus cyanescens (Copelandia / Hawaii)

A species that needs extra attention is Panaeolus cyanescens. One reason is that it’s a species that likes to root around in soil for extra nutrients. If the mushroom doesn’t have soil but is grown on the same base, fewer or even no mushrooms will appear.

Still, there are complete growkits available that let you grow mushrooms with just one extra step: you spread the included soil over the nutrient base before putting the grow tray in the bag. Don’t touch the soil, just sprinkle it over the top.

Panaeolus cyanescens is a delicate, small mushroom. But looks are very deceiving, because these little guys are much stronger per gram than a Psilocybe cubensis! The yield may be smaller on the scale, but you often get more trips out of it.

At the moment, we (still) don’t have Dutch-Headshop Panaeolus cyanescens growkits. But as soon as we do, you’ll recognize this cultivation method by the pink sticker.

Psilocybe azurescens and Psilocybe cyanescens

These species are truly next level. Closely related are Psilocybe azurescens and Psilocybe cyanescens. Azurescens has even been crowned the strongest mushroom in the world at the time of writing.

By the way, you shouldn’t confuse this cyanescens with the one in the previous section. Panaeolus c is so different from Psilocybe c in so many ways that the cultivation method is also completely different. Just look at these photos of the mushrooms in the wild:

From left to right: Psilocybe cubensis, Psilocybe cyanescens, Psilocybe azurescens (note the pointy cap) and the slender white Panaeolus cyanescens.

So similar names don’t say much about appearance or cultivation method.

Both Psilocybe azurescens and Psilocybe cyanescens are picky about nutrients. You grow them for most of the time outdoors. Once the “root system” is mature enough, they don’t like a sterile base. In addition, unlike the species mentioned above, they love wood chips. Beech wood is like caviar to them!

These mushroom species are supplied in a container with spawn; very different from colonized substrate. The latter is a fancy way of saying it’s directly ready to start fruiting. Spawn, on the other hand, is a starter that you first use to build a larger fungal colony. You can do that in a large plastic tub that you first fill with moist beech wood that has been sterilized. The fungal threads (mycelium) aren’t yet strong enough to stand up to the big bad world of microorganisms. Sterilizing the beech wood is best done in a large pressure cooker. You can already find one online for 50 euros. It doesn’t have to be high-end, but it should be large.

Beech wood sterilized? Drain off the excess water and tip half of the chips into your grow tub. Dump the contents of your mushroom spawn container in and cover with the remaining wood chips. Put a lid on the tub, but leave a small crack for fresh air. Now leave it for several weeks to months (yes, months).

You can start this process year-round, but some people have managed to start in December and pick a small harvest in September (already) the following year. It takes patience, but in return, after 1 harvest you can pick a large amount of super-strong mushrooms from your own garden every year. Unsprayed, fresh from the ground. The only thing you need to do is add a bag of beech wood chips. The next cultivation steps and tips such as adding grass seeds and covering with soil can be found in the in-depth blog about growing Psilocybe azurescens, but it applies just as well to Psilocybe cyanescens.

Dutch-Headshop outdoor mushrooms such as Psilocybe azurescens and Psilocybe cyanescens can be recognized by a blue sticker and are supplied in containers or bags of spawn.

Booze and Drugs: Which Drugs can (not) be Combined?

The weekend is just around the corner. How are you going to celebrate it? With booze and drugs? Watch out! Because not all drugs can be mixed and knocked back with a beer. Seriously though, in this article we would like to tell you about the safety of some of the most common combinations in poly-drug use.

Booze and drugs - Poly-drug use

Combining mind-altering drugs is called poly-drug use. Polydrugs actually just means a plural of different drugs and/or drinks. Because, let's face it, alcohol is just another drug. Some combinations lead to synergy. This simply means that there is a similar interaction. The effect then becomes stronger than one of the two. Take for instance the relatively safe combination of DMT and magic mushrooms. Because the substances and their effects are so similar, they will stack up and give you an extra strong trip - stronger than the trip that either of them already offer on their own. But the fact that they both do the same thing doesn't always lead to great effects. Alcohol and ketamine both cause impaired functioning of the nervous system. Especially around the locomotor system. This can cause you to pass out, vomit or a combination of both and choke on your own vomit - in summary: very dangerous!

Use the abovementioned document as a reference. With this overview, you can see at a single glance which substances you can and cannot combine. Divided into 6 safety classes. Please note: the information provided in this document was obtained from third parties and is a snapshot of research that was current at the time of publication. You can download the large version as a PDF file by clicking on the picture.

Weed and Alcohol

Weed and alcohol is probably the most common combination you'll find on the streets and in pubs. Yet in nightlife, alcohol gives weed a bad name. Alcohol takes away your inhibitions, which makes you speak up. A few glasses later you are more likely to say what you think at that moment and this can lead to irritability in others. If weed is also involved, weed is suddenly the bad guy, since alcohol is the only legal drug in most countries.

Weed and alcohol go well together, but only if you have experience with both and know when you have had enough of one or the other. Nightlife aside - combining weed with alcohol increases the risk of headaches, dizziness and nausea. Furthermore, this relatively unpredictable combination can go wrong, leaving you feeling more paranoid than with (a lot of) weed alone. If the combination of weed and alcohol goes wrong, it can be particularly unpleasant. Nevertheless, weed and alcohol is perhaps the most commonly used combination of drugs. This is true in countries where they are permitted, but also in countries where weed is prohibited or tolerated.

Alcohol and XTC

The combination of alcohol and XTC is a well-known party mix. At house parties and festivals, where the alcohol flows freely, XTC is also used. Whether it is allowed or not. So the question is whether combining alcohol and XTC is also safe. The Trimbos Institute, which specializes in these kinds of drug-related issues, says you are more likely to get headaches and nausea and that you are likely to experience a severe hangover. Because alcohol impairs your judgment, you are likely to consume more XTC (MDMA) than you should. Alcohol and XTC both reduce inhibitions and you may do things that you later regret.

The active substance in XTC, MDMA, is known to cause a Tuesday dip. This is a kind of emotional hangover that can last a day or two and sometimes longer. You feel dull, depressed and in some cases even anxious. This is caused by an exhaustion of your serotonin balance. XTC gives this happy hormone a strong boost, but when serotonin is depleted, it takes a while for your body to replace it. You can imagine how unpleasant that is in combination with a hangover from the alcohol.

Need a little something to help you out of your Tuesday dip? Then take L-tryptophan or 5-HTP to recover more quickly! You can find these and other supplements to make the first half of the week a lot more pleasant in our special category filled with all kinds of anti-hangover products.

Dull, depressed and in some cases also anxious: that is the typical Tuesday dip.

XTC and Magic Mushrooms

Mushrooms and Magic Truffles contain the psychedelic substances psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystine. That is why you can trip a lot with magic mushrooms and truffles. Combining XTC and magic mushrooms is not a crazy thought. Since the social and love enhancing effects of MDMA in XTC can be quite pleasant. In combination with the euphoric feelings that accompany a mushroom trip, XTC can make the experience of a mushroom trip quite intense. At first it's fun, later it can become a lot more unpredictable. It strongly depends on the setting whether combining XTC and magic mushrooms will be a success. Mushrooms are definitely not a party drug, although they are often used as such.

Weed and Magic Mushrooms / Truffles

And what if you want to combine weed and magic mushrooms? Is that a good idea? It depends on which source you refer to. But according to the information of the Trimbos Institute it is not a good idea. This is because weed (including hashish and concentrates) can make a psychedelic trip much more intense. Delusions and hallucinations can be intensified and your thoughts are all over the place. That is why this combination can be risky, even at home. The effects of magic mushrooms can also be experienced again. In any case, wait with smoking weed until you have noticeably passed the peak of your trip. And make sure there is someone around you who you trust and who is sober. But that advice should always be followed when tripping on magic mushrooms or truffles.

Magic Mushrooms and Alcohol

No. Do not do it. Alcohol increases the chance of a bad trip considerably. Alcohol and mushrooms only go together in Italian cuisine. The anxiety and unpredictability that mushrooms and alcohol cause together is not worth the experiment.

Safe Smart drugs

Now a word about safe smart drugs. Did you know that there are plenty of drugs that you can combine with alcohol and weed? Our smartshop is full of them. Take kanna for example. This natural South-African tranquillizer combines very well with a drink or a joint. It enhances the overall effect. Kanna gives a feeling of connection, increases your empathy and gives you a euphoric feeling. XTC light, but from nature. Speaking of which - other smart drugs that are great at parties are Kryptonite, Party-E, and Lemon X. All three give you a boost of energy, a greatly improved mood and they are safe to combine with booze or weed.

A big absentee from the list is the smart drug salvia divinorum - a strong psychedelic herb from our smartshop. Salvia works just a bit differently than the usual psychedelics like LSD, magic mushrooms and 2C-B for example. Where these drugs can give you all kinds of beautiful visions, salvia is quite confusing. For this reason we strongly advise against combining salvia with anything at all. Salvinorin A, the active ingredient in salvia, is the strongest psychedelic drug found in nature, so just stick to the leaves or extracts.

Combining Drugs and Medication

As we have no medical background, we cannot tell you what you can take in combination with drugs or alcohol. From what we can find online, we only see research on combinations that could be very dangerous or incomplete research. In no case do any reliable sources say, “This is a good idea, man!” Logically, combining antidepressants and psychedelics is very dangerous. Psychoses are lurking. We strongly advise you not to do it. Also watch out for combining kratom. Kratom is a bit like opioids, which means that you can only safely combine it with a soda.

More information about kratom? Read the description on the kratom category page.

Risky Business, Combining

Whatever conclusion you draw after reading this article, combining drugs is never without risk. It may have gone well for you, but that does not mean it is a good idea for everyone to combine different drugs. We therefore do not recommend you to experiment. So: do you not like high risks, but do you dare to take a gamble? First check if the combination you are planning is wise on our spreadsheet. If you've made it to the end of the article, you'll certainly find it back.

By the way, also read the article why psilohuasca is so dangerous. This combination of magic mushrooms and MAO-inhibitors is very dangerous!

3x Discreet Cannabis Growing in the MiniGrow One with Photos

The MiniGrow One sounds almost too good to be true. A small, compact and discreet grow box that lets you grow cannabis without odor, yeah right... Yet that is exactly what the MiniGrow One offers. For this reason, this clever little box has already built up a loyal group of satisfied growers.

The MiniGrow One stands out not only for its ease of use but also for the ability to successfully apply various growing techniques. The MiniGrow is ideal for growers with a busy or chaotic life who cannot or do not want to constantly look after their plants.

If, on the other hand, you do enjoy taking the time to observe your plants, then the MiniGrow is perfect for applying advanced growing techniques such as LST (Low Stress Training), ScrOG (Screen of Green) or your own experiments.

In this blog, we show real results from different customers who have used the MiniGrow in totally different ways.

Grower 1: The do (almost) nothing method

Both beginner cannabis growers and those with years of experience opt for a simple grow without special techniques. They just water regularly, switch on the built-in grow lights – and let them grow! They often use a reliable fertilizer such as that from Plagron. The controlled environment inside the MiniGrow One does the rest. You’ll be surprised, but this straightforward method often produces impressive results with big, fat buds.

The grow above was done by Frits, the laziest grower we know :-) Frits grew our own Dutch-Headshop Purple Haze. The only thing he did was water the plant (which he sometimes even forgot). Sometimes the plant can grow too tall. That also happened to Frits because his plant stayed a little too long in the vegetative phase. A sativa-dominant strain like this haze also has the characteristic of continuing to grow even after switching to the flowering phase. The simplest solution, which Frits applied here, is to bend down the tops and secure them with a wire.

Frits’ yield was 80 grams of dried buds, not bad for a grow with almost no effort! And the potency of the weed? We happened to have it analyzed at an independent lab. Here are the results:

Grower 2: Making maximum use of space with ScrOG and LST

Do you have green fingers, or already more experience growing cannabis? Then you may choose to use more advanced growing techniques such as ScrOG and LST. Many MiniGrow One users do this easily with the included rack. For example, you can bend the stems of the plant through the rack. This ensures the buds grow evenly. Here is an example of Alexander’s LST grow with our Private Label Runtz. The result after drying? 57 grams of delicious buds.

The ScrOG method takes a little more work and requires constant maintenance throughout the grow. With the ScrOG method, you need to prune away the lower flower formation during the grow to make the plant as uniform as possible. The goal is to fill the entire rack with buds so they capture as much light as possible and make optimal use of the MiniGrow’s space. All that light ensures the plant puts its energy into developing flowers. In short: the plant will give you as much weed as possible. All the effort you put in is richly rewarded. The yield of an LST or ScrOG grow is quite high, often between 60-90 grams dried – a weight you would normally only expect outdoors or in large grow tents.

Grower 3: Create your own artwork or experiment!

The controlled space of the MiniGrow One is the perfect place to experiment with your cannabis plants. Do you want to try something new or test whether your self-devised growing method is efficient? Do it in the MiniGrow! Dimitri beat you to it. Here is his artwork:

The name of this method is Mainlining. A technique where you try with LST to distribute the growth points evenly.

This method may have given the plant a little more stress, but still resulted in 43 grams of delicious dried buds. The only thing holding you back is your imagination!

Everything is possible with the MiniGrow One

Does effortless cannabis growing sound like music to your ears? Do you prefer to work seriously with the included ScrOG rack? Or are you eager to experiment yourself? With the MiniGrow One, everything is possible. Let yourself be surprised by the simplicity and efficiency of the MiniGrow One and be sure to share your results with us! The MiniGrow One is the way to quietly, odorlessly and controllably grow cannabis at home with a high yield.

Absinthe and Thujone: Do you really hallucinate or not?

Important to know: No, absinthe will not make you hallucinate. It is a strong alcoholic drink that, due to its high alcohol content, can cause very unpleasant effects if consumed in large amounts, such as a delirium. And that can also happen with whisky, beer, or wine if you drink too much.

In this article

What is absinthe

Thujone: the controversial compound in absinthe

The traditional absinthe ritual

Making absinthe yourself

Absinthe is a mysterious green drink surrounded by many fascinating stories. Some even claim it can make you hallucinate. But is that really true? Is it because of wormwood and the thujone it contains? Or does the high alcohol content play the leading role? In this article, you’ll read what absinthe really is, where it comes from, and why it makes such an impression.

What is absinthe

Absinthe is made from wormwood, also known as Artemisia absinthium. This plant grows in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. In English, it is called wormwood. The leaves and flowers are used as the base for absinthe. Often, herbs such as lemon balm, hyssop, and anise seeds are added. The green color of absinthe comes from the chlorophyll in the plants. In the Netherlands, the drink has been legal again since 2005, but strict rules apply to its thujone content.

Wormwood

Thujone: the controversial compound in absinthe

Thujone is the compound at the heart of it all. It is a terpene with a fresh, bitter, menthol-like taste that gives absinthe its distinctive aroma.

Thujone is a natural component of wormwood that has given the drink its mysterious reputation. In the 19th century, it was therefore thought that absinthe had hallucinogenic properties. Modern science shows that this is not the case at the amounts found in legal drinks.

In fact, the amount of thujone needed to produce a “psychedelic effect” would have to be 2 to 10 times higher than is allowed. Under European regulations, absinthe may contain a maximum of 35 milligrams of thujone per kilogram. With the absinthe you can buy in stores, you will not notice any psychedelic effect.

A psychedelic effect at a high dose of magic mushrooms or DMT can produce this kind of imagery. Absinthe does not.

Where true psychedelics like magic mushrooms, DMT, and LSD show you all kinds of colorful patterns and give you a warm, satisfied feeling, thujone does none of that. At Dutch-Headshop, we love explaining how it really works. But beware: this quickly becomes a technical story.

At higher doses, thujone acts as a GABA antagonist. This means it reduces the inhibitory effect of the neurotransmitter GABA. GABA is also the substance involved in alcohol, but alcohol works the opposite way. Alcohol is a GABA agonist. That’s why you feel relaxed, sleepy, less anxious, and unable to walk in a straight line.

If we list drugs that are similar:

Picrotoxin (Anamirta cocculus): Strong GABA antagonist, but toxic and not suitable for recreational use.

Bicuculline (in some plant seeds): Pharmacologically used GABA antagonist, not intended for consumption.

Salvinorin A (Salvia divinorum): Primarily acts on kappa-opioid receptors but can indirectly influence the GABA balance, creating a disorienting feeling. As a result, hallucinations are extremely different from those of psychedelics.

Yohimbine (Pausinystalia johimbe): Stimulant, can increase anxiety and irritability, partly comparable to thujone at high doses.

Certain kavalactones (Piper methysticum): Most enhance GABA (calming), but some variants have a slightly stimulating or disinhibiting effect.

More well-known drugs:

PCP (phencyclidine): Blocks NMDA receptors in the brain. This disrupts signal transmission in the central nervous system, leading to dissociation, altered perception, and sometimes hallucinations. PCP does not directly act on GABA, but like thujone, it disrupts the brain’s normal balance, as if pressing the gas pedal.

Ketamine: Also an NMDA antagonist, but with a shorter duration than PCP. Medically used as an anesthetic and, in low doses, studied for depression treatment. It causes a ‘disconnection’ of body and mind but does not antagonize GABA like thujone.

DXM (dextromethorphan): Cough suppressant that, in high doses, is also an NMDA antagonist. Causes dissociation and alters perception.

Furthermore, the fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is interesting to mention, as it is sometimes rightly compared to absinthe. The red-and-white mushroom contains ibotenic acid and muscimol, which, like thujone and alcohol in absinthe, have two opposing effects.

Muscimol: The active compound muscimol is a powerful GABA agonist. So, like alcohol, it does the opposite of thujone. Muscimol provides relaxation, sedation, and sometimes dream-like hallucinations; just like alcohol at high doses.

Ibotenic acid: What makes the fly agaric intriguing is that, alongside a relaxing compound, it also contains one that speeds you up: ibotenic acid. Thujone works in a similar way.

In short: too much thujone can make you feel restless or anxious, irritable, or even cause muscle cramps and epileptic seizures. Because absinthe also contains a lot of alcohol, the effects can reinforce each other unpredictably. Hallucinations only occur at extremely high doses of thujone, far above what is allowed in drinks. But by then, you would be at much greater risk from the alcohol itself. And these hallucinations are nothing like the psychedelic effects produced by magic mushrooms, LSD, or ayahuasca.

Absinthe hallucinations are probably a delirium

Stories of hallucinations from absinthe fit much better with an alcohol delirium than with the effects of thujone. You are at risk of delirium tremens if you drink excessively or if you suddenly stop after prolonged alcohol use.

A delirium causes severe confusion, disorientation, tremors, and vivid visual hallucinations. In the 19th century, when absinthe often contained more than 60% alcohol, it was probably this alcohol poisoning – not the “green fairy” – that gave artists and drinkers strange visions.

Absinthe and Vincent van Gogh’s ear

In absinthe’s history, the name Vincent van Gogh comes up regularly. The famous painter was known for his regular consumption of absinthe. Among artists, the drink was popular for its intense taste and the mysterious image of the “green fairy.”

Popular stories claim that Van Gogh’s vivid use of color, distorted perspectives, and the infamous incident in which he cut off his own ear were the result of hallucinations from absinthe. In reality, alcohol use and mental health issues probably explain this world-famous story. At the time, absinthe contained higher amounts of thujone than it does today, but there is no scientific evidence that this directly influenced his behavior or artistic style.

Van Gogh was not the only artist linked to frequent absinthe drinking. As its use increased in the 19th century, fears about negative effects grew. The term “absinthism” was used for ailments attributed to the drink. In many countries, it was banned, often after dramatic incidents that received much attention. Only in the late 20th century could producers make the drink again, with lower amounts of thujone.

The traditional absinthe ritual

Absinthe is often drunk in a special way. Fill a glass halfway with absinthe. Place an absinthe spoon on top with a sugar cube. Slowly pour ice-cold water over the sugar. The cube dissolves and mixes with the drink. The color changes from bright green to cloudy yellow-green. At that moment, the aromas are at their best.

Making absinthe yourself

At Dutch-Headshop, we do not sell alcohol. But we do have herbs and extracts for making your own absinthe. With wormwood and other herbs, you can make your own version at home.

For an alcohol-free version, steep the herb in hot water for fifteen minutes. This way, you get the taste of absinthe without drinking alcohol. Also, less thujone ends up in your drink, since thujone is not very soluble in water. Made this way, absinthe is much safer.

You’re enjoying a tasty joint or taking a hit from a vaporizer, either alone or with friends. Once you’re properly high, the munchies hit and you reach for a bag of chips or other treats. Before you know it, the whole bag is gone. Afterwards, you regret your binge – but hey, you had the munchies. So where does this sudden craving come from, and can you do anything about it? This blog will tell you more.

Table of Contents

Why does cannabis make you hungry?

Cannabis can interfere with signals in the brain. For example, you might feel hungry even though you’re actually full. The main substance responsible for this is THC – the most important active compound in cannabis. THC binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain – especially the CB1 receptors, which help regulate appetite. Cannabis also enhances smell and taste perception by affecting the bulbus olfactorius (olfactory bulb). As a result, food smells and tastes more intense and pleasant. Suddenly, toast with peanut butter and pickles becomes a gourmet meal. [1][2]

Why do you crave junk food specifically?

Okay, so we know that being high makes everything taste better. And we know it’s hard to tell if we’re really hungry or if it’s just the weed. But the question remains: why do we reach for unhealthy, processed food instead of a healthier alternative?

See – it can be done differently!

Once again, THC makes things tricky. It activates the brain’s reward system and stimulates the release of dopamine – the neurotransmitter that makes us feel pleasure and reward. Foods high in sugar, fat, and salt give us a quick dopamine boost. Our body craves dopamine – and junk food delivers that sweet hit of satisfaction.

To top it off, THC also lowers activity in the prefrontal cortex – the area responsible for rational thinking and self-control. This makes it even more likely that we’ll open and empty the bag of chips, simply because it’s harder to resist. [3]

Does every strain cause the munchies?

No, not every cannabis strain triggers a food craving. Certain properties determine whether and how strongly the munchies kick in.

Indica vs. Sativa

Indica weed originates from the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan and is recognizable by its short, broad leaves. Indica is known for its relaxing, calming effects and is considered especially appetite-stimulating.

Sativa weed comes from warmer regions and has long, narrow leaves. Sativa is said to be more energizing and creativity-boosting – with less impact on appetite.

These days, most strains are hybrids – crosses between the two types. Looking for a 100% Indica strain? Try our Master Kush from our house brand!

THC vs. CBD

As mentioned above, THC is a major trigger for hunger. High-THC weed strongly affects appetite. Another important compound is CBD. CBD doesn’t bind directly to CB1 receptors but modulates them – making it harder for THC to bind. In practice, this means the THC-to-CBD ratio plays a big role in whether you get hungry or not. Want to avoid the munchies? Then go for Grapefruit CBD, a clear-headed strain with high CBD content and almost no THC.

Terpenes

Terpenes are aromatic molecules found in many plants – including cannabis. They determine the scent, flavor, and effects of the strain. In addition to high THC levels, the terpene profile can also influence hunger. Strains with lots of myrcene, linalool, limonene or beta-caryophyllene are particularly appetite-stimulating. [4]

Want to learn more about terpenes? Read this blog.

Individual differences

Finally, personal factors play a big role – everyone reacts differently to cannabis:

Genetics: Some people have less sensitive cannabinoid receptors.

Tolerance: Your body gets used to the compounds and reacts less strongly over time.

Diet: Whether you’ve eaten or have nutrient deficiencies affects your response.

Mood: Stress, depression, or distraction can suppress hunger.

Medications: Some medications influence the endocannabinoid system or appetite.

Hormones: Your menstrual cycle and stress hormones can impact hunger.

So cannabis never works the same for everyone – responses can vary significantly from person to person.

What can you do about the munchies?

It can be really hard to resist those tasty snacks – especially when you’re staring at a bag of chips with red, glazed eyes. If you’re trying to stick to a diet, it’s even more frustrating. That’s why we’ve gathered a few tips to help you prepare for the munchies. [5]

7 tips against the munchies

1. Eat at regular times
Sticking to set meal times helps normalize your hunger and fullness cues – and reduces random snacking.

2. Exercise before lighting up
Exercise is good for you and helps balance calorie intake. A cardio session before getting high can help.

3. Choose healthier snacks
Snacking doesn’t have to be unhealthy. Stock up on smart alternatives like unsalted nuts or baby carrots – you’ll be surprised how good they taste when you’re high.

4. Try a different strain
If you often get hit with food cravings, try switching strains. Our tips above can help you choose the right one.

5. Keep yourself busy
Less temptation through distraction: read a good book, play a game, or get creative. You’ll forget about food in no time.

6. Brush your teeth
Brushing your teeth or using mouthwash after smoking helps refresh your mouth – and the minty taste can reduce the urge to snack.

7. Don’t get high on an empty stomach
Eat something beforehand to prevent later cravings. Also, keep a bottle of water nearby – it helps with dry mouth too.

Are the munchies dangerous?

No, the munchies aren’t dangerous. But over time, they can affect your eating habits, weight, and insulin regulation. A pizza with peanut sauce or popcorn with chocolate spread now and then is fine – as long as you generally take care of your health.

Fun fact: cannabis is also used medically – for example in cases of eating disorders or during treatment. So the fact that weed triggers hunger isn’t always a bad thing.

Does Truffle Microdosing Work? Yes, Says a Major Study

Can a tiny piece of magic truffle really boost your mood? A large 2022 study published in *Nature* suggests it can: microdosers felt noticeably better within a month compared to those who didn’t use anything.

Whether microdosing truffles or other psychedelics is actually effective has long been questioned. But a study in the prestigious journal Nature (June 2022) shows that microdosing can indeed have an effect.

Study Design and Results

The study [1] tracked 953 microdosers and 180 non-microdosers. All participants used an iOS app to log their mood over a period of 22 to 35 days. Those who microdosed with truffles or magic mushrooms self-reported better mood and less stress on average than the control group.

Main improvements reported by researchers:

More positive mood

Greater satisfaction with daily life

Less stress and anxiety

Reaction times improved significantly, especially when psilocybin from truffles or mushrooms was combined with lion’s mane and vitamin B3—also known as the Stamets Stack.

What Is Microdosing?

Microdosing means taking a small amount of psychedelics (truffles, mushrooms, LSD, etc.) at regular intervals—so small that you don’t experience a psychedelic high. In practice, that’s around one-tenth to one-fifth of a recreational dose.

Earlier Research

This new study builds on earlier, smaller trials. One previous study tracked 98 microdosers for 6 weeks, another 81 for 4 weeks. Both showed similar mood improvements. But just like before, studying microdosing scientifically remains tricky.

Double-Blind Microdosing Research

Double-blind studies on microdosing are difficult: in earlier trials, two-thirds of participants correctly guessed whether they had received psilocybin or a placebo. That’s not surprising—if the dose is even slightly too strong, you feel it. This new study therefore chose an open-label design but recommends stricter double-blind methods in future research.

The Opposite: 2022 Double-Blind Placebo Study

Less than two months later, that recommendation was followed. A double-blind placebo-controlled study invited 34 people just starting microdosing to test for changes in well-being, creativity, and brain activity [2].

Design: Participants received either a placebo or 0.5 g of dried Psilocybe cubensis in random order. The psilocybin content was precisely measured. Weekly tests followed, using EEG to monitor brain waves, mood assessments, creative thinking tests, perception, and memory tasks.

Key findings:

Participants correctly guessed whether they got psilocybin or placebo in 75% of tests—and only then did they report feeling “under the influence.”

Surprisingly, microdosing did not make anyone more creative, happy, or energetic in this study; questionnaires and creativity tests remained unchanged.

In some tasks, they performed worse: attention dropped faster and reaction times were longer.

EEG measurements showed reduced theta waves, but no other significant changes. Researchers believe many positive effects may stem from expectations.

So, Does Microdosing Work or Not?

On one hand, we have a larger, less controlled study suggesting microdosing works. Two months later, results published in the same journal—*Nature*—say the opposite. So which is it?

LSD Microdosing Review from 2024

Truffles and mushrooms aren't the only substances used for microdosing. That earlier, larger study also looked at other compounds. In 2024, a meta-analysis examined 14 studies involving LSD microdosing and tested whether a single dose or longer-term use made a difference [3].

Main takeaways:

Microdosing with LSD appears to be safe.

LSD microdoses (5–20 micrograms) produce a subjective sense of mental clarity and well-being.

No study found lasting improvements in mood or mental performance.

Microdosing LSD has no effect on creativity.

But it does improve time perception, empathy, and pain tolerance—and some physical effects occur too:

Measurable Physical Changes

Right after taking a microdose, the body shows some measurable changes:

BDNF levels in the blood increase—a brain-derived protein that supports neuron growth.

You sleep longer the night after microdosing. It's unclear whether this is light, deep, or REM sleep.

Changes in brain activity can be seen in various regions via EEG scans.

Psychedelic Microdosing Review from 2024

While the above meta-analysis focused on LSD, a second 2024 review also included other psychedelics [4]. It analyzed results from 19 studies of varying quality. The conclusions:

People who microdose with LSD or psilocybin self-report improvements in mood, focus, and daily functioning.

But negative effects like anxiety and physical discomfort were also reported.

If you expect microdosing to work, it often does—because of expectation itself.

There’s not enough solid evidence yet to draw firm conclusions.

Sprout cannabis seeds like a pro!

The best way to germinate cannabis seeds is the coffee filter method. We've tested it thoroughly and consistently achieved the highest germination rates. For an even better start, we recommend soaking the seeds in a glass of water for about 8 hours beforehand. After that, you can safely continue germinating them in a coffee filter. In this blog, we’ll guide you through the process step by step. We’ll also cover the classic cotton pad and dish method. Both methods work well, as long as you work cleanly and hygienically. Tap water is perfectly fine to use.

These seeds germinated longer than intended, but the photo is a great example of how well this method works.

Germinating Cannabis Seeds with a Coffee Filter

The coffee filter method is our favorite technique for germinating cannabis seeds. It not only provides the highest success rate, but also ensures the root always grows in the right direction. Here’s what you need: a flat plate, a coffee filter, a large ziplock bag and of course a cannabis seed. If you buy your cannabis seeds from Dutch-Headshop, you’ll even receive a full germination kit. Simply return the damp coffee filter to the bag. The transparent window allows you to see the seeds germinating inside the filter — that’s why it’s see-through. Follow these steps carefully:

Fill a glass with water and soak the seed for about 8 hours.

Wet the coffee filter thoroughly with tap or mineral water. It should be fully moist but not dripping. Let it drain for a second, then place it on a flat plate.

Open the filter and place the seeds inside with the pointed end facing down.

Fold the filter closed so the seeds are completely covered. Put the filter back into the Dutch-Headshop bag or a transparent ziplock bag and seal it tightly.

Hang the ziplock bag in a warm location between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius. We’ve found that light or darkness doesn’t make much difference — as long as the seeds are kept out of direct sunlight. Use tape to stick the bag to a cupboard door or wall, for example.

After two to four days, the seed should have germinated. Carefully remove it from the filter and plant it root-down, about half a centimeter deep in soil. A seedling should appear within a few days.

The advantage of this method is that the root naturally grows downward. By hanging the coffee filter with the seed’s pointed end facing down, you encourage natural growth.

Germinating Seeds with Cotton and Dishes

This classic method is reliable if you follow the steps carefully. Work cleanly and thoroughly, even if you have experience. A small mistake can make all the difference. Follow the instructions below for the best chance of success:

Fill a glass with water and place the seed in it. Let it soak for about 8 hours.

Place the seed between moist cotton pads in a small dish or germination container, away from direct sunlight.

Use lukewarm tap water or spring water.

Cover the dish with a lid to maintain high humidity.

Check daily to ensure the setup remains moist enough.

Keep the temperature between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius.

After two to four days, the seed will split and a small root will emerge.

Once the root is visible, you can plant the seed.

Place the seed root-down, about half a centimeter deep in soil.

After two to three days, a seedling will emerge from the soil.

Want proof that the coffee filter method works so well that we’ve adjusted our germination kits for our house-brand seeds? Read this blog: Germinating Cannabis Seeds - Glass of Water, Coffee Filter and More

Seeds Germinated — What’s Next?

Congratulations! That was the easiest part of growing cannabis. :) That’s why we’ve written an entire series of blogs to help you through the next steps. The next phase is to give your young plant — called a seedling — the best possible environment so it can grow strong enough to move outdoors or into the grow room. Read more here: Pre-growing your Seedling.

Don't do this: placing your plant on a windowsill and waiting for it to flower. It will become leggy and weak because it stretches in search of light. Modern double-glazed windows (HR++) block up to 30% of light — and that’s right at the glass.

Do this: place your freshly germinated plant under a gentle grow light or in a small greenhouse.

Cannabis plants need a lot of light. That’s why you should provide suitable light for young plants right after germination. A propagator with built-in lighting works well, but a CFL grow lamp (an energy-saving bulb with cool daylight) is also a great option. If you’re planning to grow indoors and can dim the lights or switch the spectrum to “grow mode,” you’re giving your plant the best possible start.

For this reason, combining chocolate or ceremonial cocoa with mushrooms or magic truffles is popular. In this article, we will explore the effects, dosage, and the risks associated with the combination of cocoa and psilocybin.

Quick refresh: Mushrooms and Magic Truffles

Both mushrooms and magic truffles contain psilocybin, a potent hallucinogenic substance that, when ingested orally, can cause a psychedelic trip lasting 4-6 hours. The strength and duration of the trip largely depend on the dosage.

Psilocybin is converted in the liver to psilocin after ingestion. It is this substance that ultimately affects the brain. This conversion takes about 20 minutes. That’s why it takes a little time before you start noticing the first effects.

Once psilocin reaches the brain, the cleaning service kicks in. After a few hours, the trip is typically over. We need to know more about this cleaning service before we talk about chocolate.

What is MAO and what is an MAO inhibitor?

MAO stands for Monoamine Oxidase, an enzyme in your brain that helps break down various neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine. Think of it as a sort of cleaning service. When certain substances are no longer needed in your body, MAO breaks them down to maintain balance. MAO also clears psychedelics. And that’s a good thing because it keeps us from staying in the trip forever.

MAO-I

When you take an MAO inhibitor (or more precisely, an MAO inhibitor), this cleaning service is temporarily slowed down or halted, allowing neurotransmitters to stay active longer, and the effects of psychedelics can be intensified. You might also see MAO-I, where the I stands for inhibitor.

For taking DMT orally, an MAO inhibitor is even essential for it to be effective because DMT is cleared faster than it can have an effect. This is how ayahuasca was created: a combination of plants containing DMT and MAO inhibitors.

Banisteriopsis caapi, an ingredient in ayahuasca, contains among other things harmine, tetrahydroharmine, and harmaline; powerful MAO inhibitors.

Be cautious with MAO inhibitors

With an MAO inhibitor, depending on the dosage, it is possible to experience a longer and more intense psychedelic trip. At Dutch-Headshop, we always recommend being cautious with MAO inhibitors. Even natural variants, like those in raw cacao or in Banisteriopsis caapi. They can cause stronger effects and interactions with medications.

Cocoa as an MAO inhibitor

If you are more familiar with the effects of mushrooms or magic truffles, it might be interesting to start with a lower dose of cocoa. Cocoa contains various active substances. Theobromine, phenylethylamine (PEA), and small amounts of MAO-inhibiting components.

The duration or intensity of a psilocybin experience can be stronger if you consume cocoa with truffles or mushrooms. However, it’s important to emphasize that even raw cocoa is relatively weak compared to pharmaceutical MAO inhibitors or an extract of Banisteriopsis caapi. The extent to which cocoa has a noticeable effect on the action of magic truffles or mushrooms can vary significantly from person to person.

What to expect from psilocybin and chocolate together?

When you consume cocoa and psilocybin together, the experience may sometimes be more intense than when you only take psilocybin. Cocoa can have a warm, heart-opening effect and may deepen the sense of empathy and connection for some. Moreover, the mild MAO-inhibiting effect of cocoa may cause the psilocybin to come through a bit stronger or last a little longer. However, don't expect a huge extension or extreme intensification; most people experience it as a subtle but pleasant enhancement of the trip.

Chocolate or ceremonial cocoa?

Regular chocolate typically contains sugar, milk, and other additives, which in a way "dilute" the pure cocoa. Ceremonial cocoa, on the other hand, is often raw, unprocessed, and much higher in active substances like theobromine. This form is traditionally used in rituals and ceremonies in Central and South America. If you're specifically interested in the potential MAO-inhibiting and heart-opening effects of cocoa, you might consider using ceremonial cocoa.

A common way to combine cocoa and psilocybin is to first prepare and drink the cocoa (in the case of ceremonial cocoa, see the recipe below), or eat a piece of dark chocolate. The cocoa usually starts working after about 15 to 30 minutes.

Then, you can take the magic truffles, mushrooms, or mushroom drops. By timing it this way, you can observe if the cocoa already has a certain physical or mental effect. Some people mix their (ground) truffles or mushrooms directly into melted chocolate or a warm cocoa drink. However, note that heat can break down psilocybin, so let the drink cool a bit before adding the mushrooms.

Recipe for ceremonial cocoa drink

Ingredients (for 1 person)

25-40 grams of ceremonial cocoa (depending on your intention and desired effect)

200-250 ml of warm water or plant-based milk (such as almond or oat milk)

Optional: a sweetener like honey, maple syrup, or dates

Preparation

Heat the liquid - Heat the water or milk to about 60-70°C (do not let it boil to preserve the effect of the cocoa).

Chop the cocoa - Cut the ceremonial cocoa into small pieces so it melts more easily.

Add the cocoa - Add the chopped cocoa to the warm liquid and stir well with a whisk or spoon. For an extra creamy texture, you can use a blender or milk frother.

Drink with intention - Take a moment to set your intention, breathe deeply, and enjoy the cocoa. This is also highly recommended for mushrooms.

Dosage: How much cocoa per gram of truffles or mushrooms?

There is no fixed guideline for the ideal ratio of cocoa to psilocybin. This is because each ingredient contains varying proportions of active substances.

Ceremonial cocoa: The recommended ceremonial dose typically ranges between 25 and 40 grams per person. If you want to combine this cocoa with an average amount of truffles (e.g., 10 to 15 grams of fresh truffles), you can use the full ceremonial dose. Prefer to start cautiously? Then begin with 10 to 20 grams of cocoa.

Dark chocolate: If you prefer to use dark chocolate (e.g., 70% or higher), take about 20 to 30 grams of chocolate in combination with your usual dose of truffles or mushrooms. This is enough to experience a noticeable chocolate 'boost' without it being too heavy on the stomach.

Adjusting: Everyone’s body reacts differently. If you notice that you are sensitive to cocoa (e.g., heart palpitations or restlessness) or psilocybin, start with a lower dose. You can always increase gradually in a future session.

Keep in mind that chocolate often contains sugar. Sugar is a very good way to come out of the trip faster; the opposite of what you want. That's why we always recommend taking truffles or mushrooms on an empty stomach. If you do opt for chocolate, choose chocolate without sugar or sweeteners.

Risks

Note that both cocoa and psilocybin can raise your heart rate and blood pressure. When combining these substances, it is advisable to pay attention to your physical condition.

As always with psychedelic advice, we pay attention to set, setting and dosage. Make sure you are in a comfortable, safe environment and do not participate in risky activities like driving. We strongly advise against using mushrooms or magic truffles at a party.

MAO inhibitors, and therefore cocoa, interact with certain medications. If you are taking medication, it is advisable to carefully read the leaflet. When in doubt, do not do it!

Lastly, we also wrote about "psilohuasca", which often uses a stronger MAO inhibitor in combination with mushrooms. Due to the increased concentration, it can be riskier for the reasons mentioned above.

The combination of cocoa and psilocybin is seen by many psychonauts as a special and natural way to deepen the magical experience. Whether you choose raw ceremonial cocoa or a bar of dark chocolate, it’s worth trying.

At the customer service of Dutch-Headshop, we regularly receive questions about growing cannabis. Every now and then, we discover that some growers have a number of remarkable myths, legends, and misconceptions. In this blog, we have listed 25 myths about growing cannabis, hoping to prevent anyone from unintentionally doing more harm than good to their little plant.

Myths about cannabis seeds and cannabis germination

1. Seeds with tiger stripes are better seeds.

The pattern or size of a seed says nothing about its quality, genetics, or health. Always buy from a reliable supplier. At Dutch-Headshop, you can safely and easily buy the best cannabis seeds, with a wide range and always discreet delivery.

2. You can determine the sex of a plant by looking at the seeds.

This is nonsense. The sex only becomes visible at the end of the growth phase.

3. Dark seeds are always better than light seeds.

The color says nothing about the germination power or quality.

4. You should store cannabis seeds in the freezer for a longer shelf life.

This can damage the cells in the seeds. Cannabis seeds are best stored in a sealed grip bag in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator.

5. The older the seed, the stronger the plant.

Older seeds can be harder to germinate and often produce weaker plants. If you store cannabis seeds cool and dry, they can remain viable for at least one to two years. With the house brand cannabis seeds from Dutch-Headshop, you get a free germination guarantee!

Myths about growth and care of cannabis plants

6. Giving more water leads to faster growth.

Overwatering can cause root rot. Cannabis plants need a wet-dry cycle if you grow in soil or potting soil.

7. Plants need 24 hours of light for maximum growth.

Cannabis plants need a rest period. A light schedule of 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness is common during growth and 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness during flowering.

8. More nutrients mean faster growth.

Too much nutrients can cause leaf burn and disrupt growth. Over-fertilization during the flowering phase can even negatively affect the taste.

9. Urinating on your plants promotes better growth.

Urine contains nitrogen, but it is too concentrated and can cause roots and leaves to die. Instead, use balanced fertilizers. Check out our plant nutrients category with nutrients specially designed to meet the unique needs of your cannabis plants.

10. Coffee grounds and banana peels are great fertilizers.

They do contain nutrients, but they need to be composted first. Adding them raw can cause mold.

11. Autoflowering cannabis is less potent.

This used to be the case, but modern autoflowers are, through crossbreeding, just as potent as photoperiod varieties and sometimes even just as large.

Myths about flowering and cannabis harvesting

12. A longer flowering period always means stronger cannabis.

Waiting too long can lead to the breakdown of THC. Use a microscope to see when your cannabis is ready to be harvested. The optimal time to harvest is when the majority of your resin glands (the trichomes) are cloudy.

13. If you put the plant in the dark before harvest, the cannabis becomes stronger.

There is no scientific evidence that this increases THC levels.

14. If you hang the buds upside down, it increases the potency.

This helps to preserve the shape and dry evenly, but it does not increase the potency.

15. Cannabis should be smoked immediately after cutting for the best high.

Freshly cut cannabis still contains too much moisture and chlorophyll. Drying and curing improve the taste and potency.

Myths about yield and potency

16. The bigger the plant, the stronger the cannabis.

Potency is determined by genetics and care, not by the size of the plant. Looking for strong cannabis seeds with a high THC content? We once grew a Purple Haze in the MiniGrow that didn't grow taller than 40 centimeters, but that cannabis contained over 25% THC according to an independent lab analysis. Then check out our category strongest cannabis seeds.

17. More nutrients mean a higher yield.

Too much nutrients can lead to 'nutrient burn' and a lower yield. The trick is to find the right balance. Follow the grow schedules from the manufacturer.

18. Severe pruning makes the plant stronger.

Too much pruning can cause stress and slow growth. Stress can come from poor growing conditions, but you can also add an extra dose of tension yourself. There are various growing techniques such as topping and fimming that can increase stress in cannabis plants. "Defoliating" or removing leaves from parts that don't receive light should be done sparingly. You can cut up to 30% of the leaves.

19. Using CO₂ always increases the potency of cannabis.

CO₂ can stimulate growth, but there is no direct link to higher THC levels.

Myths about smell, taste, and color

20. You can grow cannabis without smell.

Even 'odorless' varieties still have that recognizable cannabis smell. Carbon filters are the best solution to grow cannabis as discreetly as possible.

21. Orange peels in the pot give a citrus aroma.

This has no effect on the smell or taste of the cannabis. Genetics determine the balance of terpenes and thus the smell, taste, and even the effect. If you're looking for a cannabis that tastes like oranges, try Auto Dutch Orange Bud.

22. You can make cannabis stronger by adding alcohol to the water.

This is nonsense and can kill the plant.

23. Adding sugar to the water makes the cannabis sweeter.

Plants cannot absorb sugars through the roots; this can lead to mold growth.

24. Giving juice to your plants improves the taste.

This doesn't work and can attract pests and mold. Just give your plants clear water, they will be much happier!

25. Purple cannabis is stronger than other cannabis varieties.

The purple color comes from pigments (anthocyanins) and has nothing to do with the potency or effects of the cannabis. However, the taste of cannabis becomes slightly less bitter, as the purple color only appears when the chlorophyll leaves the plants during the last weeks of the flowering phase. Chlorophyll gives plants a green color and a bitter taste. That's why we cure cannabis: whether it's purple cannabis or not. This breaks down the remaining chlorophyll and drastically improves the taste.

Cannabis & Art | How Weed Boosts Your Creativity

Previously, we wrote about the relationship between cannabis and music, but music is, of course, not the only creative outlet that cannabis has influenced. Artists such as writers, painters, actors, and even scientists have also shared glowing stories about the green plant. But does cannabis actually make you more creative? Or does it just give users the idea that they are more creative? In this blog, we explain.

Does cannabis inspire creativity?

Cannabis is said to give creatives just that extra push they need to create amazing music, art, or stories. But how does it work again, and why can cannabis boost creativity? To explain this, we first need to look at where creativity actually comes from. You’ve probably heard that your brain is divided into two halves. The rational, thinking half; the convergent part, and the creative, feeling, or divergent half. Convergent thinking involves finding solutions using logic and analytical reasoning. In short, numbers and facts. The characteristics of convergent thinking are:

Efficiency: What is the fastest route from A to B? What is practical and convenient?

Simplicity: Convergent thinking often requires a simple and clear solution.

Focus: Convergent thinking involves working very purposefully, leaving no room for out-of-the-box solutions.

Slowness: Finding analytical solutions to problems is a slow, conscious process.

In contrast to convergent thinking, divergent thinking adopts an exploratory approach, leaving room for new ideas and possibilities. Convergent thinking combines different perspectives, whereas with divergent thinking, your brain remains open to these perspectives. Divergent thinking also pays less attention to constraints and feasibility. The main benefits of divergent thinking are:

Creativity: Divergent thinking stimulates deep exploration of ideas.

Flexibility: By not focusing on obstacles but instead considering all solutions, you broaden the exploration of ideas and increase the chances of finding a suitable solution.

Collaboration: Divergent thinking allows more room for suggestions without immediate judgment. This encourages individual contributions to solutions and ultimately group decision-making.

Speed: The divergent brain works much faster and often more unconsciously. That’s why you can play the piano at a speed that is hard to follow but easy to feel.

Of course, both ways of thinking have their pros and cons. One method may also suit certain personalities better than the other.[1][2][3]

Why does cannabis affect your creativity?

Interesting, these brain hemispheres, but what happens after smoking a fat joint? When you consume cannabis and the psychoactive substances (mainly THC) reach your frontal lobe, you may feel more creative than usual. This is because cerebral blood flow increases. This could result in increased activity and connections that are normally less active. This gives you more capacity to create new and creative associations. It is important to note that this applies to acute use, not chronic or long-term use. Additionally, THC temporarily disrupts your structured way of processing information (convergent thinking), causing you to rely more on your divergent side.[4]

Famous Cannabis Artists

Many artists have stated that they used cannabis at some point in their careers as a source of inspiration or mind expansion. We all know the American rapper Snoop Dogg as perhaps one of the most famous proponents of cannabis use today. But he is certainly not the only or the first to incorporate cannabis into the creative process.

Music

Bob Marley: As a follower of the Rastafari faith, the world-famous reggae artist considered cannabis sacred. He used it as a spiritual tool to strengthen his connection with Jah. A well-known quote from Bob Marley was "Herb is the healing of a nation".

Louis Armstrong: The charismatic jazz trumpeter, always with an infectious smile, was a big fan of cannabis. Perhaps that’s why he was always so cheerful. Louis Armstrong openly talked about cannabis at a time when this was absolutely not the norm. He called it a better alternative to alcohol and said it helped him relax and find new inspiration.

Other famous and less famous musicians (if bands or groups are mentioned, then most members of those groups):

Bob Dylan, David Bowie, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison (The Doors), Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead), Janis Joplin, Keith Richards (The Rolling Stones), Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Black Sabbath, Jack White (The White Stripes), Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Bon Iver (Justin Vernon), Jeff Beck, Tame Impala (Kevin Parker), Pink Floyd, Willie Nelson, Rihanna, Wiz Khalifa, Jimi Hendrix, Lady Gaga, Cypress Hill, Amy Winehouse, Kid Cudi, A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu, Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, Drake, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, Mac Miller, Lil Wayne, Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down), Mastodon, Nergal (Behemoth), Trevor Peres (Obituary), Chris Barnes (Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under), Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly), Devin Townsend, Gaahl (Gorgoroth, Gaahls WYRD), Fenriz (Darkthrone), Sunn O))), Melvins, Neurosis, Queens of the Stone Age.

Literature

Hunter S. Thompson: The gonzo journalist and author of the well-known book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas had no reservations about psychoactive substances. While cannabis was just a small note on his list of daily drug intake, it was nevertheless an integral part of his preparation for the creative process.

Carl Sagan (Mr. X): Carl Sagan wasn’t really a writer but a scientist (an astrophysicist and cosmologist, to be precise). Still, he wrote about cannabis under the pseudonym Mr. X. Carl Sagan used this pseudonym to avoid the stigma surrounding cannabis. He experimented a lot with cannabis and wrote in his essay about how it helped him gain deeper insights and think creatively, especially when writing and philosophizing.

Other writers:

Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Aldous Huxley, Stephen King, Ken Kesey, Norman Mailer, Tom Robbins, Charles Baudelaire, Victor Hugo, Michael Chabon, Rick Moody, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Philip K. Dick, Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, George Carlin, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, Patti Smith, Jean-Paul Sartre.

Visual Arts

Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol: Two legendary icons in the art world, known for their experimental and expressive style. Basquiat and Warhol were close friends and both used cannabis in their creative processes. They stated that it helped them think associatively and shape their visions.

Film and Media

Woody Harrelson and Seth Rogen: The American actors cite cannabis as one of their most important sources of inspiration and relaxation. Not only do they use cannabis in their daily lives, but they are also cannabis activists. They advocate for acceptance and full legalization of cannabis in the United States.

Cannabis users feel more artistic

Despite the overwhelmingly positive sentiment many artists express about cannabis, it cannot be definitively established that cannabis actually makes you more creative. As previously mentioned, this is due to the difference between acute and chronic use and the fact that a too-high dose of THC can also have a weakening effect on divergent thinking. Still, there are some important reasons why cannabis is so strongly associated with creativity:

Cannabis often has a positive effect on mood. Users feel happier, more relaxed, or cheerful, which obviously helps in creating creative work.

Another remarkable phenomenon is that cannabis users rate their own work and that of others as more creative than non-users do.

In other words, you could say that cannabis users are more open in their interpretation and appreciation of creative work. This does not mean that the creations are actually more creative, but rather reflects how cannabis users perceive creative work in general.[5]

Which cannabis strains enhance creativity?

Generally, sativa-dominant strains are recommended because they are usually more energizing and uplifting than indicas, which tend to be more relaxing. A few recommendations are:

Microdosing cannabis with a vaporizer

Many people use cannabis in very small doses to remain focused and avoid being overwhelmed by the effects. This subtle effect is said to support them in the creative process. A microdose of cannabis is about 5 milligrams. The vaporizers from DynaVap are ideal for microdosing, thanks to their adjustable oven.
