Salvia divinorum was discovered by the Mazatec Indians. The shamans of the Mazatec tribe saw this herb as a sacred medium to reach a state of trance. During the trance they could travel to the subconscious of an ill person to find the origin of the disease.
What are the effects of Salvia Divinorum
The most important substances of Salvia divinorum contains are Salvinorin A and Salvinorin B. The most important active substance, salvinorin A, is currently the strongest, isolated hallucinogenic substance known.
Smoking of the salvia leafs will bring a dreamlike state. It is, however, possible to notice the changing perception of the surroundings. Salvia is also used for meditation, because it is possible to totally ‘clean’ your mind.
Salvia can not be compared with other hallucinogenic substances such as mushrooms or cacti, it has very unique effects. The trip is of very short duration, 20 minutes to 1 hour. After that, you will return to your normal state.
During the trip a variety of states can occur, such as: two-dimensional hallucinations, out-of-body experiences, becoming an object, travelling back in time, the sense of being in two places at the same time, unstoppable laughter or other LSD-like effects.
How to use Salvia Divinorum
The Mazatec Indians used salvia in two ways: prolonged chewing of the leafs and swallowing afterwards or brewing a drink of both salvia and water.
Soak the leafs (2-8 grams) in water. Then chew the leafs for half an hour. The effects will now slowly gain power en will last for 1 to 2 hours. The leafs taste bitterly and might provoke nausea.
This is why most users prefer extracts. The effects of an extract are almost immediately noticeable, last shorter (45 minutes instead of 1-2 hours) but are many times stronger than the normal Salvia divinorum.
Consuming Salvia extracts is done by positioning 1/10 of a gram under the tongue en leave it there for 10 minutes. After approximately 10 minutes the effects start. First you feel relaxing, then you get into the Salvia trance, which takes more or less 45 minutes.
Comments on the use of Salvia Divinorum
For Salvia (extract) it is important that it is smoked in quick and effective way. This can be done by using a small bong or purely in a small pipe. It is important to inhale profoundly and keep the smoke inhaled for a long time.
Chewing the salvia extract, smoking the normal leafs or smoking in a joint will have little or no effect for most people.
Sometimes Salvia divinorum will have no direct effects, the body has to become used to Salvia before strong effects can be obtained. A very experienced Salvia user can often reach the same effects with normal leafs where a beginner needs a 10x salvia extract.
Salvia is best used in a quiet, dark setting
Of importance is that salvia is used in a quiet, dark setting (with a couple of candles or so). Watching TV will lead to unpleasant experiences, while fitting music can be very inspirational. If you do not have any experience with salvia divinorum or any other entheogens, be sure to have a sober ‘sitter’ (friend) close by to assist you if necessary.
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE USE OF 5X, 10X AND 20X SALVIA EXTRACTS. ONLY USE BEING ACCOMPANIED BY A ‘SITTER’ AND IF YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH NORMAL SALVIA!
Salvia divinorum is not dangerous or addictive, but it is definitely no party-drug! Use it in a calm and familiar setting so salvia can bring you its full potential. In general no negative effects appear after the use of salvia, yet some users complain about headaches and irritated lungs.
